How it works

Put it on. Snap it together. Start writing.

PenFusion uses two simple parts: a ring worn on your dominant hand and a flexible holder fitted around a compatible pen or pencil.

01

Put on the ring

Choose the appropriate size and wear the ring on the index finger of your dominant writing hand.

02

Fit your pen or pencil

Place a compatible writing instrument securely inside the flexible PenFusion holder.

Snap together and write

Bring the magnetic pieces together. They stay connected while the pen can move and rotate naturally as you write.

The manufactured version is planned to use durable metal components, a flexible silicone holder, and multiple ring sizes.

Why PenFusion is different

It does more than reposition your fingers.

A traditional grip changes where your fingers sit on a pen or pencil. PenFusion changes how your hand connects to it, using a wearable ring and magnetic holder to create a stable link while the writing instrument can still move naturally.

Traditional pencil grips

Sits on the pencil.

  • A single piece slides over the pen or pencil
  • Changes or guides where the fingers are positioned
  • The user must still grip and control the writing instrument with the fingertips
  • Typically made as a basic foam, rubber, or silicone classroom accessory

The PenFusion approach

Connects your hand to the pencil.

  • A two-part system pairs a fitted finger ring with a flexible pen or pencil holder
  • A magnetic interface creates a stable physical connection between the hand and writing instrument
  • Designed to reduce dependence on a tight fingertip grip while allowing natural writing movement
  • Wearable, durable, and intentionally styled for elementary school through college, work, and adult life

Who it’s designed for

Real-world testing

Developed beyond the first idea.

Over approximately two years, prototypes have been designed, produced, refined, and tested with more than 70 students.

Testing has included elementary and high-school settings, everyday classroom writing, longer assignments, and timed essay situations. Participants have shared feedback about comfort, grip pressure, control, and handwriting; individual experiences vary. PenFusion has also been shared with occupational therapists, educators, organizations, and other professionals for feedback.

The founder story

Built from a real need to make writing feel easier.

My name is Ethan Vassilev, and I started PenFusion at the beginning of my junior year of high school. Over the past two years, I have used SolidWorks to develop and refine prototypes, worked through many late nights, and tested PenFusion with more than 70 elementary and high-school students—including students completing timed, college-level English essays.

Students helped me understand how the design could affect comfort, grip pressure, control, and confidence while writing. Conversations with educators, occupational therapists, international organizations, and a mentor affiliated with MIT have also helped shape the product. I am continuing to listen, improve the design, verify manufacturing, and build PenFusion for anyone who wants a more comfortable way to write.
